We may not be able to eliminate cars in the near future, but we can eliminate the need for car ownership. Why should we spent as much as a fourth to a third of our income on owning a car? The response is that it is the only practical way to get around.
The internet and technology would make it easier and cheaper to set up systems that could provide customized travel equivalent to driving yourself but give you a chauffer. Services like this would eliminate the need to finding parking and get directions. It would eliminate the pain of car ownership that includes insurance premiums, DMV waiting, car maintenance that can mean dealing with car theft and vandalism.
The minimum elements for such system already exist for selected groups. Community cooperation can make these systems universal. One such system is starting in the D. C. area - CarFree Mobility. Visit our website at <www.carfree.biz> and read my book <www.geocities.com/takoma20912>.
Such systems can be started in any community. It would be cheaper and faster than any of the alternatives currently available or suggested. Lots cheaper and faster than building roads.
Give me your feedback here or on the website. Looking forward to hearing from you.
